Lamington day!

The Billiard Room today

The Tearoom at Old Government House on QUT's Garden Point campus is celebrating the lamington with a special dipping Friday, July 24 from 11am to 1pm.

The Tearoom's Merlo's pastry chef Emily McDonald will offer a free dipping and tasting of lamingtons made to the original recipe at the lamington's birthplace, Old Government House in Brisbane from 11am to 1pm.

Old Government House's homage to the coconut-encrusted, chocolate-dipped icon is being held on Friday to coincide with the visit of two UK-based descendants of Lord and Lady Lamington to the grand home of their forebears.

Lord Lamington was the ninth governor of Queensland and it was his French chef at Old Government House, Armand Galland, who first thought to coat cubes of stale sponge cake in melted chocolate and then dip it in coconut, a touch thought to be inspired by his Tahitian wife, when unexpected visitors arrived in 1901.

As well as taking tea and lamingtons, visitors can wander through Old Government House which has been restored magnificently and explore life at the House in the early 19th century in a virtual display, or use touch screens to find out more about the life and times of Queensland's first 11 governors.
